The Irish Bomfords

Descendents of Samuel North, 1791 - 1864

First Generation

1. Samuel NORTH, son of Charles NORTH ( - ) and Anne PILKINGTON ( - ), was born on 3 October 1791 in Dun Loaghaire, co. Dublin, Ireland.  He married Susanna CAMPBELL on 18 June 1815 in St. Andrew's, Charlotte, New Brunswick, Canada.  He died on 4 June 1864 in Sydney, N.S.W., Australia and was buried in Randwick cemetery (Sydney Mail obituary, 11 June 1864 page 2).

Ensign 102nd Regt  10 Feb 1813

Lieut 102nd Regt  14 Sep 1815

After the Armistice (18 June 1815 - the day Samuel married) a number of Regiments were disbanded or reorganized.  One of the changes was the withdrawal from the Line of the 95th (Rifles) Regt.  This enabled all Regiments raised after the 95th to move up one place in seniority.  Because the 102nd, originally raised in 1789 was senior to the 101st (Duke of Yorks) Irish Regt it was redesignated as 100th Regt of Foot.  It still held this title when disbanded in 1818.  Officers who had transferred from 102nd were put on half pay.  The 100th Regt finally disbanded in March 1818 at Chatham, members transferring to other Regts.

I have no idea where the above came from.  It is a handwritten note by me, done years ago when I did not recognise the importance of sources.  Having said that, it gives a good description of  the Regiments.

Other entries for Samuel North

15 May 1818  British half pay

7 April 1825  Lieut 27th Regt of Foot

16 March 1826  Lieut New South Wales Royal Veteran Co (Note:  Requiting began Sept 1825 - 6 officers on half pay from a variety of regiments were appointed)

25 April 1829  Lieut New South Wales Royal Veteran Co - on half pay: though he wasn't happy about the reduction in pay and sought permission to sell his commission and retire from the army (Parliamentary Papers)

It seems that Samuel's first appointment in New South Wales was as Keeper of the Bonded Stores on 7th May 1827.  Later he became Superintendent of Police and a Police Magistrate.  In 1854 he was attached to the Water Police in Sydney.

There is an undated pastel by an unknown artist (details) in the Mitchell Library in Sydney NSW, of Captain Samuel North JP, police magistrate at Windsor, New South Wales donated by the Department of Attorney General and Justice in 1918 and located at ML10 in the Library (Louise Anemaat email 14 Apr 2008). In its 'Sydney summary', The Goulburn Herald and Chronicle of 1 October 1864 says at page 4:

The officers attached to the water police and shipping offices together with the magistrates and others of the legal profession, accustomed to attending the court, have united in raising a handsome memento of the late respected water police magistrate and shipping-master. It is a large crayon portait of the late Mr. Samuel North, finely executed by Dalton, and enclosed in a massive frame. Suspended at the bench end of the hall it forms a fitting adornment of the fine court, now much improved by recent renovations.

Dalton is probably Edwin Dalton, and the newspaper report suggests that he make the portrait after Samuel's death, in 1864. (Greg Carlill email 22 Aug 2018)
