Extract from The Bomfords of Worcestershire by Dr Bruce Bomford FRCS, Salford Priors, 1983.† The work was published privately and only a few copies were made.† Re-published here with permission from Dr Bomford's sons.
NETHERTON, ELMLEY CASTLE
Alfred and Caroline Bomford lived here for a while and Jack and Ben were born in this house.† (Kathleen was born in Worcester).
Ben suggested that this was not really a Bomford home and was connected with the family only for a short time.
The Steele family have occupied the farm for many years and Mrs. Steele was a great friend of Elsie at The Orchards, and Bruce played tennis with the children there, Richard, Anne and Jennifer.
LEIGH SINTON, NR. MALVERN
Frank O. Bomford farmed here and he married his second cousin, who was also a Bomford, and Aunt to Jamesí father of Springhill.
Ben Bomford and Aunt Daisy Hughes used to go there for picnics in the cherry orchards.
This was managed by G. F. Bomford (Grandfather to Chris Bomford), but it was destroyed by fire and not insured.† Now in the area of the Collins/Robirch factory who own the premises.† The site is on the side of the river Avonopposite to Burlingham Depot.
DODFORD PRIORY, NEAR BROMSGROVE
This well known house comes into the Bomford history, but briefly.† Benjamin Bomford of Pitchill is reputed to have occupied this house and also the farm for several years, and is believed to have married Mary Smith in Bromsgrove before they moved to Pitchill.
The Farmers Weekly of 9th July 1937 stated that Benjamin sold Dodford Priory in 1852 and bought Pitchill and Morton Wood comprising 1,200 acres in all.† After the depression both farms were sold to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, but the family remained as tenants.
NORVAL FARM, SOUTH LITTLETON
A branch of the family still have this farm with a riding school attached.† They are descended from Joseph Bomford of Atch Lench who married Letitia Butler in 1810.
Joseph Trevor Bomford, 1902-1981, was the eldest son of Philip Edward Bomford, 1869-1955 of Cowsden Hall.
Joseph Trevor married Irene Stock and their son Anthony Lawrence Bomford now occupies the farm.
Anthony married Joan Collins in 1955 and they have four children, Marie, Colin, Joseph and Kim.
ALLESBOROUGH FARM, PERSHORE
Patrick John Anthony Bomford has this farm as did his father Thomas Reginald Bomford, 1891-1973.† This branch of the family may be traced back to Thomas Bomford of Wyre, 1732-1798 who was the eldest son of Thomas of Wyre who married Elizabeth Heming of Atch Lench.
This house was once occupied by Benjamin Bomford, 1811-1858 who was a cousin of Benjamin Bomford of Pitchill.
The residence later became an office for the G.K.N. Company.
COWSDEN HALL, UPTON SNODSBURY
This house was occupied by Joseph Hughes Bomford, 1835-1893 who is buried at Atch Lench.† His son Philip Edward Bomford, 1869-1956 also lived there.† The family who live at Norval Farm, South Littleton, are descended from the Bomfords of Cowsden Hall.
